Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead

By now most of us have heard about the documentary called, “Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead”. In this movie, Joe Cross talks about how he was at the end of his hope. He was fat and sick and conventional medicine was not working.

So what did he do? He went on a juice cleanse for 60 days and filmed it in hopes of curing his diseases and inspiring other people to take charge of their lives. He lost an incredible amount of weight, got off medication, and continues today to inspire people to take charge of their health.

In fact, I learned about the many benefits of juicing after watching his movie  in 2011 when it first came out. I was AMAZED and wanted to harness those same benefits for my family.

Naturally, the manufacturers of juicers are cashing in on these claims. There are now so many juicing machines to choose from that researching the best one for you can be a bit of a headache.

When I first started researching the top rated juicers for my family I certainly was overwhelmed. There were so many to choose from and it was hard to find a site that told me everything I wanted to know.

The fact is that not all juicers are capable of extracting truly healthy juice from fruits and vegetables. We will explore a bit what this means below. So, it’s extremely important to be a bit choosy when buying a juicer.

What Kind of Juicers Are Available on the Market?

The market is mainly filled with two types of juicers, centrifugal and masticating; the second type is also referred to as cold press juicers or slow juicers. Cold press juicers are the favorite of nutritionists due to their ability to extract more nutritious juice than the centrifugal units.

The centrifugal juicers come equipped with fast-spinning metal blades that result in tremendous heat production. This heat often ends up destroying some enzymes present in the juiced vegetables and fruits.

In addition, the heat also oxidizes the nutrients present in the juice, making it less nutritious than the juice extracted using masticating juicers.

This process also creates a lot of froth. If you do not like froth you will not like a centrifugal juicer as much.

So, to see yourself and your family members making the most of the health benefits offered by juices, you must use a masticating juicer.

The SKG New Generation Wide Chute Anti-Oxidation Slow Masticating Juicer is one of the top masticating juicer models available on the market currently.

This SKG device has been designed for meeting the juicing requirements of your entire family. It’s capable of extracting juice from everything starting from carrots and celery to pears, apples, and oranges.

As a side note, I purchased my first juicer in 2011. It is one of the top centrifugal juicers available. At that time, if you were on a budget like me, masticating juicers cost a lot more money. I could not afford one. So we decided to get the top juicer we could for the money we had. And that’s how we ended up with a centrifugal juicer. I purchased this one.

Today you can get a good masticating juicer for the price that I paid in 2011 for the best centrifugal juicer. If I were to buy a juicer now. I would buy a masticating juicer.

Here’s a comprehensive review of the product.

What Kind of a Juicer is it? How Does it Work?

As its name suggests, this SKG New Generation Juicer is an anti-oxidation, slow masticating juicer.

Regular masticating juicers work at 80 to 100 rotations per minute. This unit is even slower than that; it does its jobs at a speed of just 60 rotations per minute.

As a result, the level of oxidation caused by it is lower than the majority of the other masticating juicing devices available on the market. As a result of being much slower than all its rivals, the SKG New Generation Wide Chute Anti-Oxidation Slow Masticating Juicer is capable of extracting more trace minerals, fiber, vitamin, and enzymes from the fruits, veggies, and greened juiced using it.

So when the manufacturer says it’s a slow juicer, it really is very slow.

Does the SKG New Generation Come with an Auger?

Like other top models of masticating juicers, this one also comes equipped with an auger; it’s basically a drill bit or drilling device equipped with a screw blade.

The auger turns to crush and squeeze the inserted veggies and fruits against the unit’s wall. The pulp thus produced is filtered and the juices are forced out. The entire process doesn’t involve any heating up and thus the juice you get remains filled with essential nutrients and enzymes.

Why Do People Love this Juicer?

There are a number of reasons behind the immense popularity the SKG New Generation Wide Chute Anti-Oxidation Slow Masticating Juicer.

The most prominent ones among them are:

Large Capacity

Unlike the majority of its rivals, this masticating juicer comes equipped with a pretty large chute. The said chute has a width of around 76 mm, as a result of which it is capable of accommodating large items quite effortlessly.

This feature makes this SKG creation a perfect juicer for people looking for a unit suitable for juice extraction for their entire family.

Low Speed

The SKG New Generation Masticating Juicer performs the job of juice extraction extremely slowly.

It carries out the task at a speed of only 60 revolutions a minute. As a result of this, the juice extracted by the unit undergoes minimum oxidation and has all the nutrients intact in it. In addition, the natural taste of the juice is also preserved successfully.

Just for comparison purposes, the Omega J8006 operates at 80 rpm. You can click here for a full review of that juicer.

The juicer is manufactured using highly sturdy and durable materials like silicon, PEI, and stainless steel. Each of these materials is naturally resistant to breakages, corrosion, dents, and scratches.

High Yield

The amount of juice the machine is capable of extracting from a given quantity of fruits or vegetables is truly jaw dropping. You will find that your fruits and vegetables do not have a single drop of juice left in them.

The manufacturer states that oranges yield 85 to 95% juice, pears 78-83%, apples 65-76%, celery 65-70%, and carrots 42-47%.

Tip – if you feel your fruits and veggies are still wet you can put them through any juicer a second time to see if you can yield higher output.

Less Oxidation

Most people are interested in this juicer as it due to its very slow speed it prevents oxidation of fruits and vegetables. What does this mean? Oxidation is simply the introduction of oxygen to your food. A simple way of showing this is to leave an apple on the counter top for several hours. You will notice it slowly turning brown over time.

Here are some tips to slow the process or prevent the problem altogether:

  • Add lemon to your juice.
  • Put some lime in your juice.
  • Drink your juice immediately.
  • Use a masticating juicer rather than a centrifugal juicer.

Does It  Have Any Negative Reviews?

Some users have said that the juicer is excessively heavy. Those people are not wrong as this SKG product weighs almost 23 lbs or 10 kg.

Due to its weighty structure, the unit may not be suitable for people looking for a portable juicing machine. However, that surely cannot stop anyone from tagging the unit as one of the most efficient masticating juicer available on the market.

Some people also feel that the unit is a bit expensive. However, individuals who have used the juicer think that SKG wouldn’t have managed to offer the unit for a lower price as the materials used and technology embedded in the product is of highest possible quality.

Like all masticating juicers, this one is slow. And, in fact, it is slower than many others. This means you have to chop your hard fruits and veggies. Some people don’t like this.  For example, if you are juicing hard things like apples, carrots, and ginger you need to cut them thinly.

Soft Fruits

Ingredients that are soft like blueberries and bananas are difficult to extract juice from. They are, however, ideal for making smoothies and sorbets.

Are There Any Special Offers On This Juicer?

If you purchase this juicer on Amazon the manufacturer has sweetened the deal!

You get a 1-month FREE trial and 2-year warranty on ALL parts. Plus they are extending the warranty after 2 years for another 10 years for the motor and the main body.

And to make the deal even BETTER, if the machine fails during the 10-year portion of the warranty you can buy parts from them at discounted prices.

Discounted spare parts can be found here.

How do I Make Sorbets in this Juicer?

The good news is that is super easy and yummy. This is all you need to do:

  • Chop and then freeze any fruit in advance OR make juice from your fruit and freeze it in ice cube trays.
  • Set up your juicer on the homogenizing function. You remove the juicing  mesh screen and replace it with the blank. You can read about this in the manual.
  • Process the frozen juice or the frozen whole fruit through the juicer. And voila, you will have yummy frozen sorbet in a matter of minutes.

The best fruits for sorbet made in a juicer tend to be peaches, mango, strawberries, blueberries, and pineapple. Technically all fruit will work but these tend to produce the creamiest sorbet varieties.

Here are few yummy ideas:

  • strawberry mango
  • plain peach
  • pineapple with chocolate sauce
  • plain mango
  • top any of the above with fresh fruit

What Green Juice Did Joe from His Film “Fat, Sick, & Nearly Dead” Drink?

Whole foods juice from the SKG

Yum! I can’t wait to drink this fresh whole juice!

I only mention this because I talked earlier in this review about him. He drank this simple green juice that you could easily make in your SKG New Generation.

Just make sure you chop up everything so you juicer can easily extract juice. The ginger, in particular, needs to be thinly sliced against the fiber.

  • 1 lemon peeled
  • 16 stalks of kale
  • 4 apples cored and chopped
  • 2 cucumbers
  • 8 celery stalks
  • 2 in piece of ginger

This will make 2 servings. Enjoy!

Thanks for the review, it’s really answered a lot of my questions. I purchased a centrifugal juicer after watching Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead, but couldn’t stomach the amount of froth. I’ve been wanting to get back into juicing and re-introducing my family to nutritious juices. I like the idea of a slow masticating juicer and your review made it all make sense. Sounds like a solid purchase, especially given the 5 year warranty. Cheers.

Excellent review and I tried the recipe – love it, used a blender, though – couldn’t wait, but will look forward to make it in a slow juicer (asked Father Christmas) when it arrives to see what difference it makes. Still deciding what model to go for but it will be a masticating one for sure.

when I used my blender it obviously made a huge noise – how does the SKG compare? I should imagine much quieter due to lower speeds.

The SKG will definitely be much quieter than your blender! It is not totally noiseless, however.
